our team:
Marie was originally a production manager working in the Arts in London’s West End, to later having a successful career as a Sales Director for an American based operation.
After re-locating to Plymouth, Marie was approached to front a Soft Furnishings business. During this period she utilised her experience of customer service, organisation, sales/marketing and administration with her natural flare for style and a long-term passion for the world of interiors.
After many years with this company, the only way Marie could draw on her invaluable knowledge and implement her personal creativity was to form Marie Hewitt Interiors. Marie oversees all of the projects from initial enquiry through to completion.
Marie’s favourite part of the process is the faffing!
Hazel is a seamstress and has worked for The Window Dresser for over 13 years. Along with Leah S, Dorina and Hannah, Hazel makes the window dressings (and cushions and tiebacks and box seat cushions and swags and tails….) from start to finish.
Hazel started using a sewing machine at the age of 11…55 years later she is still sewing!!! After Art College Hazel worked from home making wedding dresses, ballroom dresses and clothes for her young family. Originally from Nottingham, she moved to Cornwall in 1989 and worked for a short time at Jaeger, before it closed. Hazel worked from home for 10 years, making curtains and blinds, before joining The Window Dresser.
“I love being in the studio, it’s so bright and airy! It’s a nice atmosphere and it’s a pleasure to spend my day here.”
Hazel was a competitive ballroom dancer in her teens and appeared on ‘The Come Dancing’ show in 1973, dancing the cha cha cha.
Leah P has worked with Marie for over eleven years and is a Project Manager working alongside Marie and Claire. She is a point of contact for customers and designers, helping them through the window design process, visiting them at home or in the studio.
Leah P studied humanities at university and went on to become an Early Years Professional at postgraduate level. This led her to working in Children Centres and nurseries for 6 years before wanting a career change – she was at the right place at the right time and found herself working alongside Marie. Since then Leah has watched the business grow and loves being a part of a female led, small business.
“My favourite part of the job is the creative side – helping a customer select fabrics, pulling the design together and helping them finish a room…the more vibrant the fabric, the better! I love to see the end product in its place and I also secretly enjoy faffing with the curtains when they are up!”
Outside work, Leah P is a Mum to 2 small people – Arthur and Esme – and they also keep her very busy!
Claire is a project assistant at The Window Dresser. Although her main job is helping the customers and Marie with their different projects, she also likes to do some of the sewing when we get busy.
Claire started working with fabrics back in the late 1980’s, when she started work at Habitat on their Wall & Windows dept. After this she joined the team on the soft furnishing dept in Derry’s Dept Store and stayed there until it closed in 2010. Although her main job was customer service, she also dealt with the buyers and suppliers picking new ranges. Wanting to stay working with fabrics, after Derry’s, she became one of the team in the new haberdashery shop. Here she dealt with dress and curtain fabrics as well as all the haberdashery stock. Claire loves being part of the team at The Window Dresser, which she joined in 2021.
“I just love seeing all the beautiful fabrics come into the studio ready for making up. It’s like Christmas, when we have new sample books arrive. I love my job.”
Claire loves to take long walks on Dartmoor or the coastal footpaths around Devon and Cornwall. Also in the summer when it’s a little warmer, likes to surf at Polzeath.
Leah S is a seamstress at The Window Dresser and has been a part of the team for nine years. She likes working with the fabric and making products from start to finish.
Leah S started her working life making blinds at Beaver Blinds and progressed tocurtains and soft furnishings a few years later. She has stayed in this industry because she loves it.
“My favourite part of the job is hand sewing and creating a product from start to finish. I love to see it in a person’s house once completed -it is good job satisfaction”
Leah is a fully qualified beautician and controversially, loves pineapple on pizza.
Dorina, another of our seamstresses, works full time with Hazel, Hannah and Leah S. She’s been a part of the team for over 3 years.
Dorina has been a seamstress for 17 years having studied it at school. She has worked for lots of different companies, making a variety of clothes. Dorina worked as an upholsterer for 5 years before leaving Romania and moving to Plymouth.
She attended City College and enrolled in an English speaking course, before working in alteration clothing shop in the city centre. Dorina then worked in a ‘Worldwide Shop’ for 5 years, meeting lots of different people, improving her English and learning about new cultures…but the pull of being a seamstress was strong and she wanted to return to her passion of sewing and creating.
“I like everything about my job – every day is different and every day I learn something new, even after being in the industry for 17 years. There is always room to learn!”
Dornia is originally from Arad in Romania and in her spare time, enjoys making and selling lingerie.
